Obligatory Anime Questions (to ask all Anime Fans)

What got you interested in anime?

I married into my anime addiction, literally. Perhaps I’ll explain this further sometime.

First anime series ever watched

Neon Genesis Evangelion  (it didn’t disappoint).

Favorite anime series

At the risk of sounding predictable, Fullmetal Alchemist will probably always remain my favorite anime series.  The plot for both Fullmetal Alchemist and Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood is intriguing, unique, and well written.  Similarly, the characters (even the minor ones) have distinct layers of personality; which everyone knows adds much to the overall enjoyment of a series. Perhaps the biggest motivating factor for me is that I remained captivated through both series (100+ episodes). Personally, it takes quite a bit to entertain me for that long.

Favorite anime genre

I think restricting yourself to one genre only serves to limit your horizon.  I am       willing to give any anime a chance so long as it has a decent plot.

Anime series you would most recommend

For those new to anime, you can’t really go wrong with Cowboy Bebop.  It has enough action to keep viewers entertained, mixed with plenty of humor to balance out the more intense moments.

For viewers that have been watching anime awhile, I highly recommend Anohana: The Flower We Saw That Day.  Since it originally aired in 2011, avid anime fans may have already seen it.  If not, it can be seen for free on Crunchyroll Presently, I think it is only available in English sub.

Favorite anime character of all time

This is a difficult question to answer because I’ve come across so many characters that I’ve felt a connection with. My default answer is always Edward Elric from Fullmetal Alchemist. This is mainly because FML is my favorite anime and so naturally that makes Edward my waifu, right?

Another favorite of mine is Meiko (Menma) Honma from Anohana: The Flower We Saw That Day. Her personality is refreshingly innocent and she is filled with optimism; even when faced with tragedy. This outlook on life is something I think all people should strive to follow.

Least favorite anime character

I don’t really have a least favorite anime character. I’ve experienced plenty of forgettable characters over the years, but that doesn’t exactly lend itself to be titled “least favorite.”

Anime character you love to hate

Nui Harime from Kill la Kill. All I could think about, from the moment she was introduced, is how I can’t wait for this girl to die.  Seriously, even coming across an image of her now fills me with a nagging rage. These feelings though is what makes Nui an epic antagonist. Well played creators.

Have you ever watched an entire anime in one sitting?

I haven’t. Does that make me a terrible fan? I would love to argue that I’m just far too busy to dedicate several hours to completing an anime but… I’m pretty sure that isn’t the case. Maybe I’ll do this one day soon!

What anime do you regret watching most?

RDG: Red Data Girl. Trust me, I wanted to like this series.  I daresay anyone enjoys investing time in something, only to be left disappointed. The premise was intriguing; centered around Shinto and Buddhist mysticism, and initially the protagonist, Izumiko Suzuhara, fascinated me. With that said, the narrative seemed all over the place. Small hurdles in the story would be introduced, then quickly forgotten. I would like to think that if the writers had more than 12 episodes to tell this story then it might have changed something, but in the end it might’ve just lead to more bad anime.
